Welcome to the Center for Digital Surgery

The Center for Digital Surgery is a research lab with a clear focus: Making surgery intelligent!
As a technical lab within the Department of General, Visceral and Pediatric Surgery, our research aims at levering Artificial Intelligence and Robotics to support the surgical team through assistance systems, real-time guidance or intelligent training.
Our interdisciplinary team of engineers, computer scientists and clinicians allows us to find innovative solutions for pressing clinical problems and translate them from the lab to the operation table.

Research

Our research evolves around two core questions:

When is a surgical procedure good?

Understanding the complex nature of surgery and disentangling all the factors that lead to a success is crucial to develop surgical assistance tools. Assessing surgical performance necessitates to lever multiple modalities and partially unknown outcome labels. Thus, we develop novel Deep Learning methods to find answers on this question that represents the basis for the whole field of digital surgery.

How can we make use of this knowledge to improve surgery?

We explore how our knowledge of assessing surgical situations and performance can be brought to value for the patients as well as the surgical team. Thus, we are researching adaptive assistance systems and develop novel solutions to guidance in challenging situations. To this end, sensors and robots become the eyes, ears and hands of our AI systems.
Our embedding into the clinic allows us to close the whole research loop from a clinical need via pre-clinical lab tests to prototypical evaluations in the real OR.

Cutting Edge Research - With the Goal in Mind

As interdisciplinary researchers at the interface of computer science, biomedical engineering and medicine, we know that our work is only of value if it improves the lives of patients. Thus, we have a clear focus on translating our findings into products to make our visions reality.

Furthermore, we firmly believe that the challenges of digital surgery can only be solved in joint efforts. Thus, we join forces with peers across the world and share not only our results, but also code and data sets to accelerate research in our field.
